The 2013 National Squash Championships in Manchester between 11-17 February promise to be the most vibrant and best contested Championships to date.
This year’s event looks to be an action-packed competition with the world’s best male and female players competing for the prestigious National title whilst a record number of Masters players contest fifteen age-group categories from Over-35s to Over-75s.
The men’s main event features double world champion and four time National champion Nick Matthew who will be aiming for a place in the record books as the event’s first five-time champion if he can go undefeated. On the other side of the draw is James Willstrop, twice a winner himself in 2007 and 2008, and the Yorkshireman will be hoping to stop Matthew in his tracks.
Essex-born Daryl Selby enjoyed success in Manchester in 2011 and will be looking to cause another upset, as will Peter Barker the world number seven who can never be counted out of making the final.
Tom Richards is also one to watch, the Londoner is just outside of the top ten and is a force to be reckoned with on his day.
The favourite in the women’s event is Lancashire’s Laura Massaro, the current world number three has had an incredible past two years on the world tour, reaching the World Open final and winning back to back National titles. The 29-year-old will be focussed on ensuring the trophy heads back to Chorley with her for an impressive third year.
Wanting to get their hands back on the title are Massaro’s English teammates Jenny Duncalf and Alison Waters, both have won the title twice previously and with Waters ranked one place below Massaro at world number four a thrilling final could be in store.
One to watch in the women’s event is the up and coming Emily Whitlock. One of England’s hottest prospects, the 18-year-old will relish the chance to cause an upset.
